Common Dental Emergencies
The following are some of the most common dental emergencies.
1. Tooth Gets Knocked Out
Accidents can happen resulting in teeth getting knocked out. When a tooth does get knocked out accidentally, it is important to save the tooth so that your dentist can reattach it if possible. Try not to touch the root of the tooth. Pick it up by the crown or the chewing surface if possible. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it off with water. Do not use any soap or other chemicals. Try to put the tooth back in the socket gently pushing it in with your fingers. It is critical that the to stay moist at all times either in your mouth or if you cannot put it back in the socket then put it in some milk. See an emergency dentist within 30 minutes or as soon as possible.
2. Crack Tooth
Call a dentist if your tooth has become cracked or fractured. Over-the-counter pain medication can help to minimize the pain.
3. Temporary Dental Crown Comes Off
If a temporary dental crown comes off, put a small amount of petroleum jelly on the back of the crown to bond it temporarily to your tooth. Schedule an appointment with your dentist to have the crown repaired.
4. Tooth Pain
Severe tooth pain can be a sign of an oral infection. If you are experiencing severe tooth pain is important to contact your dentist immediately.
5. Jaw Pain
Jaw pain caused by a broken jaw is another common reason for dental emergencies. If you are experiencing jaw pain try to reduce the swelling with ice and do not eat any solid food until you have been able to see your local dentist.
