Pregnancy and Oral Health: What Expecting Moms Should Know

Pregnancy brings so many changes. Your body is doing something incredible. Your emotions might feel like a rollercoaster. And somewhere in the middle of all that, your mouth might be the last thing on your mind. But your oral health and your baby’s health are more connected than you might think.

At Bethesda Family Smiles, we’ve walked alongside many pregnant patients through their journeys. We understand the unique concerns and questions that come with this season of life. And we’re here to give you clear, honest answers.

Pregnancy and Oral Health: What to Know in Bethesda, MD

The Hormone Factor

During pregnancy, your hormone levels shift dramatically. Those hormonal changes can affect how your gums respond to plaque. You might notice your gums bleeding more easily when you brush or floss. They might look redder or feel tender.

This is called “pregnancy gingivitis.” It’s common. It’s not your fault. And it is treatable.

The key is staying on top of your home care and keeping up with your regular dental visits. We can help you manage those gum changes and keep them from becoming a bigger problem.

The Morning Sickness Struggle

If you’ve been dealing with morning sickness, you already know how exhausting it can be. You might not have thought about what it does to your teeth.

But stomach acid is strong. When you vomit, that acid washes over your teeth. Over time, it can wear down your enamel and leave your teeth more sensitive.

A simple tip: don’t brush right after you get sick. We know that sounds counterintuitive. But brushing while acid is still on your teeth can actually rub that acid deeper into your enamel. Instead, rinse your mouth with water or a fluoride mouthwash. Wait about 30 minutes, then brush.

What About Dental X-Rays?

This question comes up all the time. And we understand the worry completely.

Dental x-rays are generally safe during pregnancy. We use digital x-rays at our Rockville office, which use significantly less radiation than traditional film x-rays. We also use a lead apron to shield your belly.

That said, we only take x-rays when absolutely necessary. If it’s a routine checkup, we can often wait until after your baby arrives. If you have a dental emergency, an x-ray might be needed to safely diagnose and treat the problem. We’ll discuss every option with you and make sure you’re comfortable with the plan.

Is It Safe to See the Dentist While Pregnant?

Yes. Absolutely yes.

In fact, we encourage it. Preventive dental care during pregnancy is safe and important. Routine cleanings help manage the gum changes we mentioned earlier. They also remove bacteria that could potentially affect your baby.

The ideal time for treatment is during your second trimester. By then, morning sickness has often eased up, and you’re more comfortable lying back in the chair. But we can see you at any stage. We’ll just adjust how we position you to keep both you and your baby comfortable.
